Our best tips for cross-country attire

A successful ski trip begins with the right attire.

The choice of cross-country skiing attire is not only important for comfort but also for your performance on the ski trail. Johaug has created a great collection that caters to all types of ski trips, whether intense training sessions or excursions.

What you choose depends on the intensity you plan to maintain during the ski trip. Intensity determines how much heat you generate and the ventilation, insulation, and protection level you need. Here are our best tips!

We have divided our outer layers into two categories: High and low intensity.

For high-intensity skiing, it's important to choose an outfit that prioritizes efficient ventilation over excessive insulation.

In addition to efficient ventilation, flexibility is important for performance and comfort. For milder days, a lighter set with maximum ventilation is the perfect choice.

For ski trips with lower intensity or when the temperature drops, it's important to prioritize good insulation and warmth.

As your outer layer, we recommend choosing apparel with great flexibility so you can move freely on the ski trails.

Our Cloud series is an excellent choice if you need a cross-country outfit for higher-intensity sessions. The collection features a close, feminine fit and flexible materials. We recommend this set at the beginning and end of the ski season, on milder days.

For colder days, our bestseller Concept 2.0 gives you the same freedom of movement, but with extra insulating warmth, including down panels placed where you tend to get the coldest.

For relaxed ski trips with low intensity, we recommend outer layers with good insulation and materials that withstand weather and wind. The degree of insulation and protection you need depends on various factors such as weather, temperature, and intensity.

One of our favorites for low-intensity ski trips is the Advance Primaloft series and the Temping Primaloft pants. However, if you prefer a thinner outer layer, you can also enhance insulation on cooler days by opting for warmer base layers, or vice versa.

Wool and thermal base layers for high and low intensities

High-intensity sessions call for base layers that work as hard as you do. When you're pushing your pace or skiing in milder conditions, choose a technical, moisture-wicking base layer or a lightweight wool blend. These are designed to pull sweat away from your skin, keeping you dry, fresh, and comfortable under your outerwear.

On more relaxed ski trips or when the temperature really drops, your body produces less heat. This is when a thicker base layer and 100% merino wool is your best friend, keeping you warm and cozy during your ski trip.

Technical fabrics, like polyester and polyamide, are experts at wicking moisture away from your skin. The result? You stay dry, fresh, and focused, no matter how much you sweat.

Our best-selling Lithe Tech and Aerial Woolmix series are made with a blend of wool and technical fabrics, and are our most lightweight base layers with a super soft feel against your skin.
