How to wash different fabrics

Product lifetime is the most important factor in reaching our sustainable goals.

Read our guide below and get some advice on how to care for your products in a way that makes them last longer.

How to care for wool and wool base layers

Wool do not require washing after every use, thanks to the natural protective coating of wool that makes it resilient against dirt and dust. Thus, they remain relatively clean, and often, simply airing them out is sufficient.

Washing wool in a washing machine

When it's time to wash your wool items, follow these essential steps:

  1. Select a wool program: Use wool-specific settings on the washing machine or choose a gentle cycle with a low temperature of 30°C and reduced spin speed.

  2. Choose the right detergent: Always use a detergent specifically formulated for wool, as regular detergents contain chemicals that can harm wool fibers.

Valuable tips for maintaining the quality and longevity of your wool garments:

  • Avoid fabric softener: Never use fabric softener on wool, as it can affect the natural properties of the wool.

  • Skip the dryer: It's best to avoid the dryer, as it can lead to shrinking and felting of wool items.

  • Lay heavy garments flat to dry: When drying heavier wool items, lay them flat on a drying rack, and place a towel underneath to absorb moisture.

  • Deal with pilling: If your wool garments develop pilling, you can easily remove it with a lint comb or fabric shaver.

  • Preserve the shape: Exercise caution when hanging wool garments to dry, as it may cause them to lose their original form.

How to wash workout clothes

To ensure that your workout clothes stay in good condition and retain their shape, it's important to follow proper washing recommendations.

  • Wash inside out: For workout tops and tights, it's good practice to wash them inside out with all zippers closed. This helps protect the fabric surface and zippers, preventing them from being subjected to wear during the wash.

  • Sort by similar colors: When washing workout clothes, always sort them with similar colors. This helps prevent color fading and the transfer of colors from one garment to another.

  • Use detergent without bleach: Choose a detergent without bleach to protect the colors and materials of your workout clothes, thereby extending the life of the garments.

  • Avoid the dryer: Workout clothes made from modern materials often dry quickly and don't require the use of a dryer.

How to wash smelly workout clothes

If your workout clothes have a sour odor, you can use vinegar as a rinse aid to eliminate the unpleasant smell. You can also soak the workout clothes in water with a bit of vinegar overnight and then wash them, as usual, the following day.

How to wash down products: Tips for proper maintenance

When washing down products, it's crucial to carefully follow the washing instructions to preserve both the quality and longevity of the item.

  • Temperature and detergent: Avoid high temperatures and use mild detergent without bleach.

  • Zip up zippers and pockets: Before washing, make sure to zip up all zippers and close pockets, and fasten any Velcro to prevent damage.

  • Avoid fabric softener: Never use fabric softener when washing down products, as it can adversely affect the properties of the down.

  • Tumble dry with dryer balls: The best way to dry down products is in a dryer with dryer balls or tennis balls in a medium-temperature setting. This helps restore the volume of the down and prevents clumping.

  • Alternative drying method: If you don't have access to a dryer, you can gently pick and separate the down clusters with your fingers through the fabric while it dries. This requires patience and precision, and it's essential to ensure that the drying process doesn't take too long. Therefore, make sure to do this in a warm room.

How to wash jackets

To ensure that jackets and running jackets maintain their quality and functionality, it is crucial to wash them properly. Otherwise, qualities and features such as breathability, moisture-wicking, and water-repellent properties may be compromised.

Here's how to wash jackets:

  1. Read the care instructions: Always start by reading the care label inside the jacket. This provides essential information about recommended temperatures, washing cycles, and any specific instructions for your particular jacket.

  2. Close zippers and fasteners: Ensure that all zippers are closed, and any fasteners like Velcro are secured before placing the jacket in the washing machine.

  3. Select the appropriate washing cycle: Wash your workout jacket separately or with similar colors and materials. Opt for a gentle washing cycle with cold or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can cause the jacket to lose color or its water-repellent functionality.

  4. Use a mild detergent: Use a gentle, liquid detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Avoid strong detergents or bleach, as they can harm the fabric and the jacket's functionality.

  5. Avoid fabric softeners: Refrain from using fabric softeners, as they can reduce the jacket's breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

How to wash cotton

Cotton clothing is a significant part of our wardrobe, renowned for its comfort and versatility. Washing cotton garments correctly is crucial to preserving their freshness, fit, and color over time.

Follow these steps to ensure that your cotton items remain in top condition:

  1. Check the Care Label: Always check the care label. This will provide you with essential information about the appropriate washing temperature, wash cycle, and any special instructions. Most cotton garments can withstand machine washing, but the temperature may vary, so pay close attention to this.

  2. Temperature Control: Cotton is generally a durable fiber, but to avoid shrinkage and maintain color, you should refrain from washing cotton garments in overly hot water. Wash them at a temperature specified on the label, typically between 30°C and 40°C.

  3. Use Mild Detergent: Choose a mild and color-preserving detergent to protect the color and fibers of your cotton garment. Avoid using an excessive amount of detergent, as this can lead to soap residue buildup.

  4. Avoid Excessive Spinning: Cotton garments can endure moderate spinning. Refrain from using a high-speed spin, as it can damage the fibers and cause unnecessary wear and tear.

  5. Air Drying or Gentle Tumble Drying: After washing, you have two drying options. You can hang your cotton items on a clothesline to air-dry them. This helps prevent shrinkage and preserves the fit. If you opt for a tumble dryer, set it to a low heat setting to avoid overheating. Also, check the care label, as some items may tolerate tumble drying better than others.
